About this scrapbook page: |
Although Pretoria is known as Jacaranda City because of its thousands of trees, Jacarandas are not indigenous to South Africa - they are originally from South America. They were imported to South Africa from Argentina in the 1880s and, according to Johannesburg City Parks, nursery owner William Nelson is credited with lining the streets of Pretoria with the tree. It is illegal to plant new ones as they are alien and harmful to the SA environment.
