mineko iwasaki, born masako tanaka on november 2, 1949 in kyoto, was japan's number one geiko (geisha) until her sudden retirement at the age of 29. the book 'memoirs of a geisha' was based on her life. the book has since been turned into a movie. mineko herself has written a book about her life. a very wonderful read. of course my grandmother has a copy! mineko is my grandmother toshiko's second cousin, although i have no idea what relation she has to me.
