I started with the top left pic which I resized in Paint.Net to 12x12. Then I added the pebbles (bottom left) as a layer & used the Gradient (linear) tool to blend it from the bottom. My next layer was my water dragon, this time the gradient tool was set on radial, followed by the ship which was blended the same way. I then transferred it into Photoscape where I added my skeleton & pirate which had been extracted in Paint.Net. I wanted these to look like ghosts so I blended them by changing the opacity!

Crikey you lost me on the gradient tool. I should try more blending as I am not good at it. Lot of work.
