The Pukeko is a NZ swamp hen found throughout all of NZ. Though I'm sure most of them live on our property LOL. They are actually quite pretty birds. We've done a lot of planting of native trees on our property & my husband Bryan has to put cages around them when 1st planted so these guys won't dig them up. For the 'Show us your bird' challenge

What a wonderful page. Don't you love all the Maori names. I love your journalling too - sounds like they are wonderful creatures (except for the vegies) and I feel for your dog trying to protect his land and being upstaged by cranky birds. Wonderful informative page with great pictures.

Good choice Mary. Like you said good job we didn't choose the same NZ bird. Pukeko are only found in a few properties around the city - more in the outskirts - they are real nuisances in gardens. I have friends who threaten mayhem to them!!!! Great page for them - love it.
