It was April 21, 2007, and Rebekah was set to compete in the shot put. She was on the infield, in an area sectioned off for the discus and shot-put events. She was retrieving her second warm-up toss when a discus soared off its intended path and struck the left side of Rebekah’s head. The crash of the 3-pound metal saucer against her skull was so loud that a nearby parent said it sounded like a bowling ball breaking in two.
