I asked this question in the comments sections, but maybe it is better here...

How did you select those parts of your photos to go to b/w in your beach layout? Did you use the magnetic selection tool in Photoshop (tedious since it isn't perfect), or is there a simpler technique that I haven't discovered yet?

Sorry I haven't been able to get on this site for about a week :( Basically, I just use layers. If it is detail work, I will set up masks, but for simpler objects - you don't even have to do that. Once I have the layers set up, I just blow the image up and erase the areas I want to show through (usually, black and white is on top and I erase out a hat or flower or something). You certainly can use the magic wand (hold shift down to select multiple areas at once) or the selection tools. I have a few tutorials on this...I think they are on my website (amymcdow.com) if you want to look there. If that doesn't work, feel free to email me and I can see if there are some other tips I can share. Thanks for asking!

Hi Amy,

I followed some of your directions to create the Mikki Blue Green layout I just added here. I didn't have this photo in colour, so I used her eye colour from another photo and dropped into a masked area below, then merged the areas using Luminosity to get the best replica of her eye colour.

This was a lot harder than I expected and still, if blown up, you can see lines.

How do you make it so that the layers aren't a hard line between colour and black + white? Do you use soft erasers/brushes around the edges between colour + b/w overlap?

Thanks! Without your tutorial, I wouldn't have even known where to start!

That is funny here, because I am stuck with digital scrapbooking, I decided to get Adobe Creative Suite 2 for this hobby. LOL. So far I am very satisfied with Adobe , more than others software.


My best choice of photo editing software is Photoshop CS/CS2 , regardless of whatever version you use.

Lightroom from adobe, hmmm, I saw it's fancy layout, but I don't believe it will deliver a better functionality than real Adobe Photoshop..... so, I ended up spending a bit more to get the Photoshop.

in photoshop cs you can make the selection with a soft edge brush inverse or/and use a soft edge eraser (with the red selection)then you can desaturate what you want with no hard edges ( you can feather too)

I love using Photoshop-7, CS, and CS-2.........Illustrator, InDesign, and Image Ready. I make most of my embellishments using Illustrator first and then export them into Photoshop to finish up with.

One way to select an area when using Photoshop is by selecting the Wand tool, while holding down the shift key click on the area of the photo that you want to select and click. Continue to hold the shift key until the all the area has been selected. Go over to the layers palette and add a new layer. Select the paint bucket icon and what ever color you want to change. Go back to the area that was select and fill with the paint bucket color that you selected. On the layers palette and select color........and you're done! All of the fine detail with remain only the color has changed.

Hey everyone, Don't laugh but I use Microsoft Digital Imaging Suite for all my photo editing, designing my kits and just about everything. Tried using photoshop and I can but so far I can do everything in Microsoft and I do it much faster and easier, at least for me. I've pretty much peeked the program! LOL
