Hi, i am new to gimp and i just downloaded some flourishes from the internet. But, they all come with a white background. I tried erasing it, but was not successful. Can anyone help me by showing how to make the background transparent??? Any help is appreciated.

If the file is a jpg or gif you have to add an alpha channel before GIMP will allow you to take the white away. Go to the bar at the top of the image window, go to layers, and then down to transparency. Make sure that "add alpha channel" has been selected. It will appear light gray with the selections below it black if it is selected. This will then enable GIMP to "see" tranparency in the file. When you save it, be sure to save as a .png or a .bmp file . GIMP will not save transparency in a .jpg file. It will all turn white again on you.

Did you try the magic wand? It selects everything that is continuous area. Then you can just cut out what you want. If your flourishes have no white at all you can also try the select by color option (the three colored blocks with the hand) again, cut out what you don't want. If you want to make an entire background transparent you can open up the "layers" dialog and turn down the tranparency on the whole thing. Hope this helps!
