Well, I cannot answer all of your questions as I am just learning myself . . . But, I did figure out how to make things transparent around an image (for example around your embellishment). I create a new image and select a transparent background under advanced options. Then I save it with the extension '.png' I have used the color selection under Layers (on the menu bar) to change colors, add or subtract colors, etc. There are also lots of color options under the Filters and Script-Fu options . . . The large 'T' is how you select text. The options then open up and you can select your font choice, size, and color/pattern. When you are ready to type, click on your picture and a box will open for you to type in the text. After you type, you can adjust size, colors, rotation, etc.
I hope this helps, and will be eager to read other posts! I still struggle making my pages in GIMP, and will post a couple of my pages so far . . . All critique, ideas, etc. welcome :-)
Best,
Beth
