When you save it the default may be set to psp. To change it click on 'Select file type' then choose 'By extension'. Then when you type the name of the file be sure and end it with '.png'
For example: 'embellishment1.png'
Hope this helps!!

When I go to save, I do change it to a png file extension. That is what is confusing me so much.

You also may need to change the default that windows is using to open your files currently, if it is set to PSP Windows itself may be the problem, not GIMP. Find a file that you saved with PSP, right click on it and go to properties. There should be a line that says something like "Open file with" and a button. Click on the button and try to find GIMP. This should enable all of your PSP files to be opened with GIMP and may help when you try to save them.
