I've just posted my page A kind of magic in the group to illustrate my problem and frustration with extracting hair successfully.I've used PaintNet as a first time use for extraction. I normally use DSA2, now Craft Artist but I do find curly/wispy hair and fur so difficult. I'd be grateful for any helpful tips as I see pages from others where the extraction of hair and fur is superb - how do they do it? Thanks a lot for any help, Pauline

Your page is wonderful. I understand the problem you are having with extracting hair & fur. I probably am not much help as I use Photoshop Elements 9. I find it difficult too but I use a soft air brush for the extraction & it gives the hair a soft outline rather than a hard line. I'm sue others using the same programs as you will be able to help, Judi :)

Hi Judi, thanks so much for this information. I do have an older version of PSE but I've never used it, I think I'll have to get it out and have a go. Your tip about the airbrush is great, DSA has airbrushes so I'll give it a whirl. I think the main thing is going to be lots more practise but tools like you've suggested and suggestions from GrannFranny using masking and the eraser tool are things I hadn't thought of. Thanks so much for your input, really helpful and for your comments too, always such a pleasure to read and they do give me more confidence to try new things! Hugs, Pauline

Sorry I'm late in this discussion.
A good tip I got from Courtney for fur at least is using the smudge tool in PSE. After you have extracted take your smudge tool at around 3 or 4 pixels at a high strength and click and pull the fur or hairs in the direction they go every where it is needed. I would think this is good for hair too, at least short hair.
