How to soften edges and only the edges.

I use Photoshop elements 7 and am trying a lot of different things lately, but I can't seem to discover how to soften edges of for example a extracted photo or element, tried the 'feathering' but I don't see much happening.
Hope you guys can help.
Thanks!

Have you tried using gaussian blur. This might not what you mean, I use it quite often. It can be used in many ways. If I want a 'glow' I make a light coloured shape on a layer, use a large blur and lower the opacity. You can also use it to soften the edges of a layer mask. Lesley

I usually just use the eraser in PSE. You can change the shape, style and opacity to get the effect and just trace around your image. The brush style show how they look and show what it does when you pick one. I usually use soft round brushes and you can change the opacity plus change the size of the brush. The larger the brush the bigger the area of opacity making your edges softer. For me it's easier this way.

I'm not familiar with PSE but I use photoshop CS4. When I click on my extraction tool there's a place on the top bar that says feather with a space beside it. You can enter a pixel count in it. I usually type in 3 but you can go higher. This will give you the soft edge you are looking for. I don't know if PSE has this feature.
