Scratches and grungy textures are good for more gothic, urban pages. If you have a dark texture, use "multiply" and reduce transparency this is for PSE). If it's a light texture, use "overlay" or "soft light." Also, if you have Photoshop, it pays to get some awesome Photoshop Actions. Coffee Shop Blog has wonderful actions that make things look vintage, vivid, soft, etc. You can find great textures at ShadowHouse Creations.
