I haven't played around with this yet, but what I would suggest if you are using PS is either highlight the glitter image and click CTRL at the same time as holding one other layer and group to a smart object a couple of layers at a time so you can see where it is being flattened.
Alternatively uncheck the eye so you just have a couple of layers selected and check merge visable, if you continue this process you may be able to see which layer you lose the sparkle on..
I will also try this for you and try to find the right soloution x

I don't know if I am doing things correctly but I NEVER flatten, merge or combine any layers ever - should I be doing this? It always works OK for me and I can go back to the page and alter with no problems. Sparkles always seem to stay. Joce.
