Use something like Photoshop and you can draw a element that you use as a repeateing pattern or just draw colors whatever you feel like doing.
My stupid question is how do we upload to the challenge?

Photoshop can be downloaded from Adobe.com - for someone new to it, I suggest Photoshop elements - it is more user friendly. You could also use your free paint program to create a patterned bg or create your own shapes/colored bg.

paint.net is easy and very good as a program. It is comparable to the expensive ones and there are plenty of tutorials to help you use the program as well as add ons to enhance it.
